The EU-Life funded Hazred project has extended its recruitment deadline until the end of April to allow additional manufacturers the chance to take part.

The EU-Life funded Hazred project has extended its recruitment deadline until the end of April to allow additional manufacturers the chance to take part.

Hazred's aim is to demonstrate the benefits of setting hazardous waste reduction targets and developing waste reduction plans in partnership with six industry sectors identified as most in need.

Manufacturers of machinery and equipment employing no more than 250 employees could be eligible to take part and access free, confidential advice from one of 12 expert industry advisors - if they apply by 30th April 2007.

Participants will receive a series of on-site visits and a bespoke action plan will be developed to promote effective reduction, management and evaluation of hazardous waste.

Hazred Project Manager, Anna Pizzi, says: "Rising raw material costs and competition from overseas are putting increased pressure on UK manufacturers to identify cost efficiencies".

"Taking steps to reduce and manage hazardous waste more effectively could be an excellent first step - and one that many companies have yet to consider".

"Anyone interested in taking part should get in touch so we can answer their questions about project participation".

"And only twenty places are available so people need to act fast".

"All advice is free and confidential and, crucially, we hope it will help businesses secure valuable cost savings".

But even those who do not take part directly can benefit from the project.

A hazardous waste reduction plan has been produced for the manufacture of machinery and equipment sector and is now available on the Hazred website.

This allows project expertise to be shared with firms who are unable to take part.

Each plan sets out reduction targets and practical measures that businesses can take, building on best practice currently being employed within the six sectors.

"An open day will also be held later this year to help disseminate the project learnings to a broad cross-section of businesses", adds Pizzi.

Hazred is a partnership project between the Environment Agency, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, the Irish Environmental Protection Agency, the Welsh Assembly government, Envirowise, the Groundwork Foundation, SafetyKleen, and the Waste Recycling Group.

It is due for completion in November 2007.
