Free guide helps cut hazardous wastes

The HAZRED catalogue is a searchable database which brings together examples of best practice from participants, as well as other previously published case studies.
A sector-specific action plan and best practice catalogue designed to help small businesses in the machinery manufacturing sector reduce hazardous waste and save money are now available free of charge from the HAZRED website.
This material is being shared as a result of HAZRED, a three-year EU-Life funded project led by the Environment Agency in partnership with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, the Irish Environmental Protection Agency, the Welsh Assembly government, Envirowise, the Groundwork Foundation, SafetyKleen and the Waste Recycling Group.
The HAZRED action plans were used as a framework for waste reduction programmes initiated by project participants.
The best practice catalogue is a searchable database which brings together examples of best practice from participants, as well as other previously published case studies.
Together these materials could be a valuable resource for companies interested in hazardous waste reduction.
More than 50 companies across six industry sectors took part in the project, which saw specialist advisors conduct on-site consultations with participating companies, resulting in a bespoke action plan for hazardous waste reduction.
Collectively the participants identified methods for diverting a significant volume of waste from landfill, as well as securing cost savings.
HAZRED Project Manager, Anna Pizzi, says: "While the project itself has now closed, businesses EU-wide can still benefit from this information via the project website".
"Recent Environment Agency figures revealed that the volume of hazardous waste to landfill in the UK had dropped by 60% since 2004.2, but we know that many time-poor small businesses have yet to take action to reduce their hazardous waste".
"It is our hope that the HAZRED sector plans will offer an efficient, informative guide to those businesses wanting to now make savings for themselves".
The additional industry sectors which contributed to HAZRED are: speciality organic chemicals, manufacture of machinery and equipment, metal finishing, motor vehicle maintenance and repair and photographic/print processing.
