Hydraulic drives replace or aid gearboxes

A Hagglunds Drives product story

Hagglunds Components' large hydraulic drives can be used to either replace large gearboxes completely or to assist the existing setup.

The last few years have seen growth in demand for materials and new infrastructure and utilities in developing countries, with sales going ever higher.

This, of course, puts pressure on production facilities, requiring innovative ideas for increasing production volume and efficiency.

These calls for ever higher productivity puts high demands on critical pieces of process plant.

Very often the limiting factor is a large gearbox that is already working at its limits, conditions which can dramatically reduce the life of these high-capital items of plant, but the cost of replacing or even upgrading the gearbox can be very high.

Even if the cost is acceptable the time needed to replace can mean a halt in production, which can be even more costly, particularly if the gearbox fails and results in an unplanned halt in production.

Hagglunds Components' large hydraulic drives can be used to either replace large gearboxes completely or to assist the existing setup.

Hydraulic gearbox assist drives add power to the plant and extended gearbox life.

Sugar cane crushing mills are traditionally driven by steam turbines through gearboxes and open gears with at least three rolls operating like a big mangle.

The sugar cane is chopped and fed into the mill and the juice is extracted.

There are usually a series of around five mills.

By disconnecting one of the three rolls and driving it directly with a hydraulic drive motor companies add power to the mill, relieving the existing drive.

By varying the speed relative to the other rolls the mill given more power andthe crushing performance is improved.

Conveyors in bulk handling or mining operations can receive extra power by adding a hydraulic drive either to the head end or tail end.

Full electronic variable speed or a simple hydraulic pump control enables the hydraulic drive to follow the main drive without synchronisation problems.

Hagglunds drive systems provide an attractive, simple and compact drive arrangement.
