The new AS-i master bus terminal from Hayes Control Systems makes it easy to integrate the AS-i low-level fieldbus system with installations based on any of 12 higher-level fieldbuses.

Users of the new module benefit from the simplicity and low cost of the AS-i system for connecting sensors and similar simple field-mounted devices, while retaining the higher-level fieldbus for use where larger volumes of data need to be handled.

The new AS-i master bus terminal is manufactured in Germany by Beckhoff, for whom Hayes Control Systems is the exclusive UK distributor, and it features the same compact design as standard input/output modules in the Beckhoff bus terminal range.

In use, the KL6201 can simply be added alongside other I/O modules, or it can be used as a standalone unit.

In each case, it communicates with the higher-level bus via a bus coupler module.

Twelve of the most popular fieldbus protocols are supported by currently available bus couplers, including Profibus, Interbus, Ethernet, DeviceNET, CANopen, Modbus and Beckhoff's own fibre-optic based Lightbus.

The new KL6201 bus terminals from Hayes Control Systems provide all the functions associated with standard AS-i masters.

These include optional automatic identification and addressing for up to 62 AS-i slave devices, and support for star, line and tree connection topologies.

To provide optimum flexibility in larger installations, multiple AS-i masters can be used with a single bus coupler, up to a limit set by the data capacity of the higher-level fieldbus.

Programming, configuration and data access for AS-i devices connected via the new bus terminals are carried out via the normal process image, making complete integration easy, even in the most complex applications.

When used in conjunction with PC-based control systems implemented with Beckhoff's TwinCAT software, working with data from the terminals is made even easier by TwinCAT's powerful and intuitive IEC 61131-3 compliant instruction set.
