In response to growing demand for customised monitoring devices, HBM has set up a new team of OEM Sensor Specialists to develop specially designed sensors from their standard range of products.

The new team uses the latest computer aided design packages and rapid prototyping technologies to create working samples of measuring transducers within 6 weeks.

For almost any measurement application HBM can now provide custom made sensors for monitoring anything from force, displacement and acceleration to pressure, speed or torque.

"As lead times have decreased cost pressures on manufacturers have mounted and we have witnessed a marked increase in the number of OEMs that are outsourcing for their sensor needs," says Mike Johnson, Sales and Marketing Manager of HBM UK.

"The availability of the right sensor at the right price is not always covered by our standard range of products, now the OEM team can offer the optimum solution to any measurement task," adds Johnson.

The process starts with the definition of the measurement task.

The end customer or machine builder specifies basic parameters like the mechanical quantity to be measured, the ambient conditions, any dimensional constraints, the levels of accuracy required, how many units are needed, the cost limitations and any other useful information like sketches of the application.

The OEM team then checks the general feasibility and specifications.

If an existing design already exists it may be adopted as the starting point for the new solution.

The team then check their design concept with the customer and also provide a time schedule for the subsequent design steps.

The various design parameters are then fed into a specially developed 3D CAD software package that generates all the constructional information, finite element analysis and CNC data.

The software also calculates the costs for prototyping, series production and, if required, further development costs.

The data is then transformed into a working prototype using the latest in stereo-lithographic techniques.

The OEM team is capable of producing anything from a complex one-off measuring device to component runs of up to 100,000 units per year for large installations.

Recent completions for the OEM team include the development of a measuring device for monitoring the strength of uterine contractions during pregnancy and thread tension monitoring units for large textile machines.
