Fasteners aid French trailer curtain production
A manufacturing business based in Northern France has saved production time using fasteners developed by a UK engineering company.
Established in 1988, the company now employs more than 80 people and produces approximately 400 units a year.
Searching for an alternative to high tensile nuts and bolts used to connect the subframe to the chassis and in some cases welding plates to the subframe, Nick Humpish, MD of Hymix, came across the Huck range of products.
Crucial for him was the issue engineering integrity, where the final fastening solution was compliant with chassis manufacturers' guidelines.
After consultation with Rivco, an approved distributor of Huck fasteners, he settled on the 16mm Huck-Fit fastener, Huck tooling and Powerig hydraulic power units.
Hymix has also incorporated a number of process changes.
Humpish explains: "Three years ago we started the best practice of lean manufacturing and team enterprise and through the working relationship with Rivco we have introduced a number of ideas, for example, a just-in-time two-bin Kanban system.
More importantly, the quality of the fastening fix has improved, providing a guaranteed clamping force.
Painted fabricated components no longer need secondary welding, which compromised the aesthetic of the original build and the reliability of an antitamper design saves time on having to re tighten nuts and bolts.
In fact, the whole process from hands-on training of our employees to fastener installation is easy and quick, which means that we can produce more trucks without having to increase the size of the factory".
Matt Roden, Director at Rivco aid: "Hymix are a great example of a business reaping the immediate benefits of investing in a quality fastening solution.
We look forward to a long term relationship".
Hymix will be demonstrating its new fastening solution, with Rivco and Alcoa Fastening Systems personnel on hand to provide technical support, at this year's Site Equipment Display (SED) Exhibition at Fen Farm, Wavendon, Milton Keynes, from 18th ton 20th May 2004.
