Twenty employees from a Shropshire manufacturing business have recently achieved National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) in metal processing and allied operations.

The NVQs were delivered and funded through Metals Industry Skills and Performance (MetSkill) for Telford based Alcoa Fastening Systems (AFS) - formerly Huck Fasteners.

AFS provides engineered, high-quality, high-performance fastening systems for a variety of applications, predominantly in the truck, trailer, commercial vehicle body builder, auto and railcar markets.

Nationally recognised and designed by the metals industry to address specific skills needs of metals companies in order to achieve modern and productive workplace cultures, improve business success and stay competitive, sixteen of the employees participated in the NVQ Metals Industry Teamwork Training Programme at Level 2 and four the Leadership Development Programme at Level 3.

Stefan Biela, Manufacturing Manager at AFS, said: "This achievement is a reflection of the positive training ethic at AFS.

Not only does it represent the commitment to developing our employees' skills it also sends out a signal to customers that the products they're receiving from us are produced by a qualified, competent and well managed workforce.

All of our new shop floor employees will work towards attaining the relevant qualification".

Phil Extance, Executive Director at The Learning and Skills Council, Shropshire, the local arm of the national nondepartmental government body responsible for funding all post-16 training and education, said: "The Learning and Skills Council, Shropshire would like to congratulate the learners at AFS for successfully completing their NVQ qualifications.

With a recent survey highlighting the existence of a skills gap where 13.4% of employees in Shropshire are not fully proficient in the job that they are employed to do, we are pleased to see local companies like AFS taking the lead and investing in their workforce and their future".
