Honeywell has signed an agreement gaining exclusive rights to the Optrand fibre-optic pressure-sensing technology for direct measurement of in-cylinder pressure in engine applications.

In-cylinder pressure sensing allows an unprecedented level of engine performance, reducing the total system cost required to achieve stringent new emissions regulations.

Optrand is the first company to develop and prove fibre-optic pressure sensing for use in in-cylinder engine applications.

Honeywell has licensed all patents, pending patents, provisional patents and associated IP.

"This technology addresses a major need in the marketplace - that's why it's an ideal fit for us".

"We have a broad line of products for the transportation industry and a fibre-optic sensor is an excellent addition to our range", said Lee Burtelson, a Honeywell Business Development Manager.

"Optrand has developed a family of fibre-optic pressure sensors that are characterised by high performance and long service life".

"This technology is an enabler for the powertrain initiatives in Honeywell's automotive, aviation, transportation, ordnance and marine lines of business".

Optrand fibre-optic pressure sensors provide many advantages over competing technology.

Key advantages include maximum operating temperatures up to 450C, miniature sizes, high accuracy due to direct pressure measurements (as opposed to indirect techniques), immunity to EMI and possibility of integration with existing engine components (eg spark plugs, glow plugs, injectors and gaskets).

"Honeywell products are internationally known for quality and excellent technology".

"We are delighted to play a part in maintaining that reputation".

"This fibre-optic pressure sensing technology is a perfect fit for the extreme application environments in which their engines must perform", said Marek Wlodarczyk, President of Optrand.
