Zero-backlash gears for tube forming machine maker

Addison Tube Forming, manufacturer of automated tube bending machines, is moving away from hydraulic to electrical systems, and has used Harmonic Drive gear component sets from Heason Technologies

Addison Tube Forming, manufacturer of automated tube bending machines for such diverse applications as refrigeration to motor scooter handle bars, has until recently employed hydraulic systems for operating its machines bending heads.

Now, however, because of the increasing simplicity, reliability and low maintenance of electrical alternatives, and the resulting demands from its customers, the Bamber Bridge based company is moving away from hydraulic to electrical systems.

An example of this are the two machines supplied to Dunlop Hiflex PowerBend of Salisbury for the manufacture of hydraulic pipes for an advanced vehicle Active Cornering Enhancement system.

These 'DB10TH6' machines from Addison employ programmable servo systems to produce multi-bend pipes in seconds.

Switches between the different part numbers is automatic and batch runs produce the different components sequentially to the required number.

Helping to achieve this performance, with enhanced consistency and repeatability plus none of the effects of temperature gradient, are Harmonic Drive gear component sets from Heason Technologies, Chichester.

According to Addison, these gear sets were selected for their ratio/size characteristics and high efficiency, resulting from the patented IH gearing, combined with simplified integration into the machines.

These performance features of the Harmonic Drive units, together with their zero backlash, ensure that the servo systems totally eliminate the inaccuracies experienced with hydraulic systems.

Currently Heason are supplying two model types, the HFUC and HFUS, in sizes 32 and 45 respectively.

These units combine a component set with shortened Flexspline and a high stiffness cross roller bearing which simplifies mounting to the load without the need for additional bearings in many cases, reducing design and production costs whilst minimising overall size.

The HFUC has an outer diameter of 110mm with a maximum torque of 372Nm.

The HFUS has an od of 155mm and a maximum of 882Nm.

Both have 50:160 ratio range.
