Heason develops torque motors for Qinetiq's TAHS

A Heason Technology product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 27, 2009

Heason has worked with Allied Motion to deliver 700mm-diameter brushless and frameless torque motors for Qinetiq's Towed Array Handling System (TAHS).

With a separate rotor and stator design delivering a continuous stall torque of almost 7kNm and maximum torque approaching 24kNm, the custom-built Megaflux series motor directly drives a large winch used to deploy sonar array systems equipment on submarines.

Qinetiq's Winfrith-based Underwater Systems business has successfully developed an electrical drive solution for TAHS over traditional hydraulic drives to maintain improved control, high reliability, flexibility in installation and reduced through-life cost.

TAHS fulfils the needs of many of the world's navies for compact, robust and effective solutions that minimise impact on other onboard systems, as space on any submarine is always at a premium.

Megaflux-series thin-ring brushless servo-motors are designed for direct-drive applications where smooth and precise control of large inertia or high torque loads is important.

The design features minimal cogging torque and is characterised by a space-saving form factor with a large diameter-to-length ratio that allows the motor to be directly integrated on the driven shaft, eliminating the problems of torsional resonance due to flexible couplings and backlash associated with gear-driven systems.

The customisation for the TAHS application involved increasing the stator and rotor length to a nominal 150mm to gain an increased torque density.

The motor characteristics were also modified to maintain voltage, torque and other critical mechanical and winding constants that best matched Qinetiq's servo-drive specification.

The large through-hole in the Megaflux design also helped the customer maintain a compact design, accommodating electrical cabling and other services such as slip-ring assemblies within the space-restricted application.

The standard Megaflux range covers eight frame-sizes and more than forty models, with diameter-to-length ratios from 150 x 30mm to 760 x 123mm, covering continuous stall torque from just 3Nm to more than 2000Nm.

The Megaflux thin-ring motor range is available from Heason as a separate component or can be supplied as a part of a complete system with commutation and positioning encoders, servo drives and motion controls.

The motor is also available in a fully housed version and, through Heason's motion-systems design service, can be assembled on customer-supplied components or built into complete positioning actuator solutions.
