Absolute rotary encoders for Profibus-DP

A Heidenhain (GB) product story

The Heidenhain PROFIBUS-DP interface is well suited for automation applications when the requirements for transfer speed of the position value, are not particularly stringent.

The primary challenge of many automation applications, such as robotics or materials-handling systems, is the networking of a large number of sensors and actuators within one system.

The Heidenhain PROFIBUS-DP interface is well suited for such applications when the requirements for transfer speed of the position value, are not particularly stringent.

A gateway is an attractive solution for connecting rotary encoders to the PROFIBUS-DP by providing several advantages over integrating the field bus interface in the rotary encoder.

These include, significantly smaller space for installation, higher vibration tolerance values and operating temperatures up to 1000C at the encoder.

Exchange for servicing is also simple.

EnDat is used at the interface between the encoder and gateway.

This introduces further advantages including the fact that only one model of encoder is needed for applications with short transmission times (EnDat) and PROFIBUS-DP.

In addition, to absolute rotary encoders, absolute angular and linear encoders with EnDat interface can also be connected to the same gateway and the complete range of warning and diagnostic functions of the EnDat interface can be used with PROFIBUS-DP systems.

The certified Heidenhain gateway complies with the profile for encoders of the PROFIBUS user organisation (PNO) and can be operated as a Class 1 or Class 2 device.
