DLS gave James Bond film-makers an economical off-the-shelf solution which not only performed well and looked the part but was able to do the job in limited space.
The resultant 'four-horse-race' features four Hepco DLS Driven Linear Systems each of which was supplied as a complete belt-driven assembly with AC geared motor, speed controller and limit switches.
The choice of Hepco for the race track system was an easy one.
"Whenever we need precision running gear, we always turn to Hepco," confirms Project Manager, Gavin Ridley.
As this suggests, Harris Blyth has specified Hepco systems for other engineering projects.
The requirement was to demonstrate the variation in fuel costs and impact on the environment between PETROL, DIESEL, LPG, and CNG.
The chosen race track design has a stainless steel cutout of the Ford Focus on each of the four DLS carriage plates.
When activated by hand sensor, the cars take 15 seconds to complete the course and assume their final positions.
This process requires the cars to travel differing distances at variable speed.
"Hepco's AC motor package gave us a simple and reliable means of controlling the movement of the four cars," Gavin Ridley continues.
"The alternative would have been a servo or stepper motor based system which would have been much more complex to install, programme and maintain.
The 3.33m DLS modules were also supplied as single piece assemblies which saved us construction time." The T-slots provided as standard with DLS allowed the system to be quickly bolted down on site.
The uncomplicated Hepco system also had far greater aesthetic appeal than other options.
It is uncluttered and clean, important attributes for an exhibit designed for an image-conscious company such as Ford.
