builder can do

This two-axis machine accurately drills holes in aluminium beams up to 4m in length and combines the talents of several Hepco standard linear motion products.

The machine is designed to perform a single task, repeatedly and to a tolerance of 0.2mm.

Its cost to build was a fraction of the price of an off-the-shelf machine tool and its payback was virtually instant.

A key benefit was that it freed-up production time on one of the company's machining centres allowing it to concentrate on more complex milling.

"It wasn't just a question of the high cost of a standard machine tool for handling workpieces of 4m in length," explains project engineer, Keith Thrower.

"It would also have given us many more features than we needed, so the investment would have been far from cost-efficient." The machine base is an MCS extrusion to which is bolted the x-axis comprising a GV3 double-edged slide mounted on an SB beam that is slaved to the DLS Driven Linear System.

Keith Thrower concluded, "The only non-Hepco parts we had to buy were a servo motor and air drill.".
