Slides keep cutting machines in precise position

A Hepcomotion product story

The Elite Cameron range of slitting and rewinding machines uses HepcoMotion SBM GV3 slides with integral supports.

Highly precise knife and core positioning is vital to an Elite Cameron paper converting machine.

Minimum deflection and rigidity are therefore important qualities of the HepcoMotion linear system that carries a precision measurement device and laser source.

"Any deflection in the shaft would be amplified on the position of the laser beam compromising slitting accuracy", explains Design Engineer Rob Snell.

"The beam and double row bearings are also robust enough to withstand the rigours of the industry, an operator can even stand or swing on the system with no adverse effect".

The Elite Cameron range of slitting and rewinding machines, core cutters and ancillary products is manufactured by the Somerset based company, TS Converting.

For the positioning of the slitting system for paper and medical film, the company uses a HepcoMotion SBM GV3 slide with integral supports.

This integrated unit proved to be the most cost-effective option giving versatility in mounting yet being strong enough to withstand any misuse.

"It also gives a high value appearance to our end product", Rob Snell continues.

The HepcoMotion SBM is one of the many options available within the company's GV3 linear motion system.

Slides in three grades of precision, three types of bearing assembly, three methods of lubrication and three types of carriage are complemented by an extensive range of sizes.

GV3 provides an extensive menu of design elements from which the optimum linear system can be specified to suit both application and budget.

The HepcoMotion slide specified by TS Converting is double-edged and its carriage plate carrying the measuring elements is moved manually.

The load on the carriage is less than 1kg.

Although smooth movement is essential some friction is required to prevent the carriage overrunning and to give the operator some "feel" for setting the alignment of knives for the slitting process.

For this purpose the linear system bearings were supplied preloaded.

It was also fitted with cap wipers that in addition to introducing an element of friction keep the guideway free from the ingress of paper dust.

"The V guide principle central to this system gives us excellent reliability", Rob Snell concludes.

"This supported unit was easy to install and has proven to be simple to service".

Although the fundamental operation of the knife and core positioning system remains the same it is packaged by the company to fit different machines.

TS Converting therefore specifies the HepcoMotion SBM in a variety of sizes to meet this variety.
