Historically the competition has been run across six regions but in 2007 this was reduced to just three.
As a result the Western region, into which Tiverton falls, now comprises Somerset as well as Devon and Cornwall.
"The increased size of our region meant that Richard was up against the combined might of Devonport Dockyards and Westland Agusta in this round and still secured a joint second place", explained HepcoMotion's Training Manager, Bob Gregory.
"We are delighted by his achievement".
Richard's apprentice piece is a type of air engine with three cylinders in radial configuration.
"It's an impressive kit that has run effectively at speeds up to 4000rev/min", Bob Gregory said.
HepcoMotion has a long history of apprentice training.
Many in its management team have come up through the ranks following qualification.
