Hidrostal, the fluid management specialist based in Newbury, has supplied Thames Water with six large horizontally mounted screw centrifugal impeller pumps for its Beddington sewage treatment works.

The Hidrostal H12K-HD close coupled pumps were installed, in December 1999, in two activated sludge pumping stations and replace six existing axial flow pumps.

Thames Water had seen a loss of efficiency with the previously fitted axial flow pumps which were collecting rags on the guide vanes and were suffering wear at the propeller tips.

This was resulting in high maintenance costs.

The replacement pumps from Hidrostal each had a rated output of 303 litres per second, at a 3.2 metre head.

They were able to more than match the performance of the existing pumps.

Thames Water chose Hidrostal pumps because they offered flexibility of installation. There was little room to manoeuvre within the plant and the existing pipework was to remain in place.

This required the pumps to have branch sizes similar to the old units, and to have horizontal suction with a discharge connection vertically downwards.

The versatile and compact Hidrostal pumps met all these criteria and at the same time offered a gentle pumping action and large free passages.

Independent tests undertaken by the sewerage department in Singapore have shown that the screw centrifugal impeller does little or no damage to the activated sludge flock whilst pumping.

At the same time, the Hidrostal pumps can handle large amounts of debris without blocking.

These gentle handling characteristics are attributed to the long impeller blade, which typically makes one and a half turns, thus contributing to a slow build up in pressure and low acceleration.

This, coupled with a long turn from the inlet to the outlet branches, gives the impeller its low net positive suction head (NPSH) and low shear characteristics.

Screw centrifugal pumps are now an accepted alternative for handling return activated sludge.

These low maintenance pumps are also fitted with oil lubricated double mechanical seals.

These features, combined with high pumping efficiency, will reduce operational costs significantly.

Experience has shown that Hidrostal pumps have good 'Least Whole Life Costs' compared to other solids handling pumps.
