Pump manufacturer Hidrostal has recently delivered twenty process pumps to the showcase Hatton wastewater treatment development by North of Scotland Water.

Pump manufacturer Hidrostal has recently delivered twenty process pumps to the showcase Hatton wastewater treatment development by North of Scotland Water Hidrostal's highly efficient screw centrifugal impeller pump has been selected for all the key process operations on this plant which serves the communities of Dundee, Arbroath and Carnoustie

Performance tests have been completed, prior to despatch, and the pumps will shortly undertake eight specific duties throughout the plant.

Selection of Hidrostal pumps was based on previous application experience, proven reliability, and compliance with the comprehensive specification.

However, The ability to deliver pump casings, liners and impellers in materials matched to the duty, and the adjustment available to sustain efficiency over long periods, were both considered desirable operational features.

Within the primary stage of treatment a pair of wear resistant, submersible pumps will carry out the arduous duty of delivering grit to the classifier.

Explosion proof units, will then return the under-flow from this unit to the works inflow.

In the state of the art activated sludge plant, which follows primary treatment, the Hidrostal package includes the returned activated sludge pumps.

This is a sensitive application, as sludge flocs must not be damaged.

Wide experience of damage free pumping in the food industry enable Hidrostal to supply the low shear units best suited to this duty.

The unique screw centrifugal impeller pump was provided in an horizontally mounted configuration with the total duty being met by five, 55kw, dry mounted units, each rated at 420litres/second, Hidrostal's extensive experience, in the replacement of older positive displacement pumps for water utilities, resulted in all sludge pumps being included in their scope of supply.

A breadth of supply which is unique amongst submersible pump manufacturers.

Two 30kw, explosion proof, immersible pumps feed the sludge thickening units, whilst two, heavy-duty pumps, similarly rated at 35litres/second, feed the digester.

At the tanker unloading facility for imported sludges, two Hidrostal pumps deal with the variety of contaminated sludges delivered to the plant.

In addition to process pumps, Hidrostal will also be equipping the site drainage pumping station with high volume, high efficiency 'Prerostal' units.

Four of these fixed speed, variable output, pumps will provide the 200 litres/second capacity which is needed to which deal with the wide variations which occurs between Scottish winters and summer flows.

As Neil Tyler of Hidrostal comments; "Unlike other impellers, the screw centrifugal impeller was specifically developed for the damage free handling of fish and fruit.

These features have proved ideal in most process industries and at North of Scotland's Hatton Plant Hidrostal were able to meet a wide variety of duties".
