A new family of encoders offers a viable, future-oriented solution for industrial control engineering and integrated motor feedback applications Hengstler reckons the name speaks for itself: Acuro stands for accuracy

There are two devices.

Acuro-Drive is the first fully digital motor-integrated encoder with an open BiSS interface.

Acuro-Industry is an adaptive encoder based on the 58mm industry-standard size.

The "heart" of the new absolute encoders is a sensor unit that forms the common basis of all industrial and motor feedback encoders.

This sensor unit is centred around an all-new opto ASIC design with unique benefits.

Both single- and multi-turn versions are accommodated in the same compact housing.

This facilitates design tasks and allows operation even under restricted space conditions.

The design also features enhanced safety through self-diagnostic functions.

The term of "safety" primarily refers to long-term operating safety, which includes such measures as, for example, reduced number of solder joints, use of simulation-optimised toothed wheels, or heavy-duty ball bearings.

A wide range of permissible operating temperatures offers enhanced operating safety with highly integrated motor feedback systems - whether at chilly -40C or hot +120C.

Integrated sensors monitor the signal intensity and send control or warning messages if the first signs of a malfunction are detected, as may be the case if predefined limits are reached due to a contaminated coding disk or lens, or if the light source intensity has deteriorated due to aging.

A single-step check performs a plausibility check of each individual increment of the internal signal processing.

A code check ensures that the encoder signal returns the acquired sense of rotation bit by bit.

Even the operating temperature of the encoder can be measured and read at a resolution of 8bit and monitored by means of a warning or alarm message.

A unique feature of all encoders is the M12 PCB plug, which is supplied with all encoders with T-distributor bus cover.

This plug is provided for a Hengstler Tico positioning display, which simultaneously indicates any diagnostic messages.

Diagnostic LEDs on the rear side provide instantaneous information on the supply voltage, bus communication or possible alarm status.

A recessed reset key facilitates startup, and the time-consuming mechanical search for zero points has become a thing of the past.

The star of the Acuro series is its geared optical multi-turn part, which is immune to magnetic interference, eg from brakes, welding systems etc.

In addition, it is maintenance-free and runs extremely silently.

The current consumption of the multi-turn version is as low as 100mA at 5V - about one-third of conventional values.

In this way, Acuro contributes to reducing drive costs.

Moreover, Acuro offers unparalleled high-speed applications at a peak speed of 12,000rev/min.

The coding disk supplies an optical absolute resolution of 13bit per turn.

After internal signal interpolation, up to 22bit (approximately 4.2 million increments) are achieved at the output, and a variety of different resolution values can be offered depending on customer requirements.

Acuro allows safe communication with all common fieldbus formats and open interfaces.

Point-to-point communication, such as SSI and parallel, as well as the fieldbuses such as Profibus, DeviceNet, CAN, CANopen and Interbus are available.

The new manufacturer-independent BiSS interface is included in each standard SSI encoder.

The new bidirectional BiSS sensor interface is used especially for demanding motor feedback applications.

It offers a number of benefits compared with conventional interfaces, and it is licence-free.

Using only six lines, a synchronous serial connection is established between the encoder and master at a transmission rate of up to 10Mbaud and line lengths of more than 50m.

In addition, this newly designed interface allows parameterisation and access to the data stored in the encoder.

The hardware is backward compatible with SSI and ensures smooth integration into existing control systems.
