Horstmann Controls' ChannelPlus H37 XL electronic programmer is the first to be capable of controlling three independent channels: one for hot water and one each for two separate central heating zones

With continuing acrimony over the Kyoto agreement to reduce greenhouse gasses, energy efficiency has never had such a high priority With these greenhouse gas emissions and householders' financial savings in mind, the area in which increasing energy efficiency can reap the best rewards is that of improving the efficiency of domestic heating systems

As a result, following recommendations from energy efficiency groups, the government is scheduled to issue new regulations on the installation of heating controls in Part L of the new Building Regulations.

These new regulations are forecast to come into effect in early 2002.

The new regulations will require that there should be reasonable provision in all new build for no heating zone to exceed 1502 metres and for the operation of heating systems to be separately timed in each zone.

Separate control should also be provided for water heating.

Essentially, this would mean that a traditional large two storey home should have the heating controlled separately for upstairs and downstairs and have the hot water controlled independently of both.

Such a control system is beyond the capabilities of mechanical programmers but the Horstmann Controls' ChannelPlus H37 XL electronic programmer is the first on the market to be capable of controlling the three required independent channels: one for hot water and one each for two separate central heating zones.

The new regulations also require that the replacement of boilers must see the installation of energy efficient models.

This is also likely to increase demand for the ChannelPlus H37 XL as it becomes part of complete system upgrades, replacing more simple controls.

This may become a necessity in some instances, as earlier controls may not allow the new generation of boilers to maximise their efficiency or, worse, may not even work with the new boilers at all.

The ChannelPlus H37 XL three-channel 7-day programmer allows up to three on/off periods in each 24-hour period, with different settings possible for each day of the week.

Daily programmes can be copied across with a simple one-touch operation.

General programme options include auto, all day, on constant, off constant and a holiday option that suspends operation for up to 30 days.

In addition, there are one and two-hour boost, and instant advance facilities, plus a one or two hour extension to an on period.

A large, easy to follow LCD display provides information on all of the programme sequences.

The ChannelPlus H37 XL programmer is designed for use with fully pumped central heating systems.

For full three-channel control, three zone valves will need to be provided.

The controller is mains powered, with a long life battery reserve.

It has 3 amp changeover contacts and a built-in starter programme.

It also comes with a plug-in wiring plate for easy installation and benefits from Horstmann's industry leading, comprehensive 5-year warranty.
