Wiping system keeps rollers clean all
the time

Hoerbiger-Origa has developed a system for continuously wiping rollers to keep them clean, which will be of particular benefit to web processors Contamination of the process rollers with dirt, pick-up of the processed material or other foreign matter, can damage the web along its full length, creating tonnes of scrapped material

Hoerbiger-Origa has developed a packaged system that continuously wipes rollers during manufacturing.

The basic function of the system is to traverse a cleaning pad or brush continuously back and forth across the roll.

This is attached directly to the carriage of a rodless pneumatic cylinder or electric linear drive, which provides the reciprocating drive motion.

The type of pad is chosen to be appropriate for the application.

The action removes debris, and in the case of hard steel rollers also maintains a polished roller surface The concept is equally applicable to most web handling industries - steel production, film and paper manufacture, printing, plastics and various surface coating industries.

Each system is purpose built to individual customer requirements, but is based on the same design principle.

The majority of systems use for the drive mechanism a rodless pneumatic cylinder, fitted with heavy-duty steel roller guides for maximum durability.

The system typically gives an operating life of 10,000-20,000km between service intervals and the modular nature of the drive cylinder means a wide range of operating parameters can be accommodated, eg loads, speeds, strokes, positional accuracy and environmental conditions etc.

For a straightforward low cost, constantly reciprocating roll-wipe system a completely pneumatic configuration will be most appropriate.

This can even incorporate Hoerbiger-Origa's unique oscillating valve, which will completely eliminate the need for an electrical connection to a control system, allowing the roll wipe mechanism to be operated totally pneumatically.

This is particularly appropriate if it is necessary for the roll-wipe to operate in Eex explosion proof hazardous zones (alternatively the roll wipe can be supplied with an intrinsically safe electrical control system).

A pneumatic retract mechanism, based on standard rod-type cylinders, is an integral feature of the roll-wipe system.

This allows the wiper to be disengaged from contact with the roll for exchanging cleaning pads, maintenance and 'parking' during plant shutdowns.

It also ensures that the cleaning pad is maintained in contact with the roll at optimum pressure.

Aware that some potential end-users may want to consider alternatives to pneumatic actuation, Hoerbiger-Origa has also developed two electrically driven versions.

The first uses a standard AC induction motor, the second captures the high performance dynamics of servo motors.

Both versions use the company's heavy duty belt driven electric actuators instead of the pneumatic rodless cylinder.

The electric configuration provides the end user with total programmability and positioning for spot cleaning, so can be used in the most sophisticated and demanding of applications. Request a free brochure from Hoerbiger-Origa ...
