Oil mist removed from cutting heads

A Houghton UK product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 19, 2007

A Scandmist unit was fitted to two slab milling machines at a Timet plant to remove the oil mist being created from each of the four cutting heads.

Houghton has recently supplied a Scandmist MA 400D unit to the Timet plant at Witton, Birmingham.

Timet is the worlds largest supplier of high-quality titanium metal products in hundreds of diverse aerospace, industrial and emerging applications where no other metal is as reliable or economical.

Timet's activities cover every phase of titanium research, manufacturing and sales.

The decision was taken to install the Scandmist unit to be fitted to two slab milling machines to remove the oil mist being created from each of the four cutting heads, following a site survey to measure total air particulates in and around the machining facility at Timet.

The survey highlighted areas for improvement, the main improvement being the Noble and Lund and Russian slab milling machines.

The 400D unit will replace a Losma type extractor which had been fitted to one of the mills earlier in 2006 and had proven to be ineffective.

Scandmist MA is an extra heavy-duty industrial air cleaner that efficiently separates oil fumes, oil mists and emulsion mists during continuous operation, even during extreme operating conditions.

In most cases, the polluted air is so efficiently cleaned it can be re-circulated onto the production area.

The unit exceeds international health and safety standards and is simple and low cost to install.

Several designs and sizes are available to adapt to varying requirements.

Houghton has an exclusive relationship with Scandfilter of Sweden, enabling the company to offer the latest generation of industrial air cleaners, which deal with the problems associated with oil mists and fumes.

With recent changes in guidance from the HSE in relation to the safe use of metalworking fluids, this new technology will assist customers to comply with the requirements of the guidance.

Stuart Crosby, Process Engineering Manager, Timet, comments " A review of our metalworking fluids was undertaken by Houghton at our Witton site, which also consisted of an air survey of the machine shop, carried out by Scandmist".

"The results indicated that a significant improvement could be achieved by fitting a Scandmist 400D to the large Titanium Slab Millers".

"The unit is currently being installed and we have also purchased a Dust Trak aerosol unit to monitor the condition of the air output back into the work area".

Steve Mayo (Sales and Marketing Director), Houghton, comments "Our partnership with Scandfilter has been a great success and we will continue to develop our products and services to differentiate ourselves from the competition in the market by offering best in class products, technical support and services".
