Pharmacia has selected the POMS Manufacturing Execution System (MES) from Honeywell for its pharmaceutical manufacturing operations in Puerto Rico and Sweden.
Pharmacia has selected the POMS Manufacturing Execution System (MES) from Honeywell for its pharmaceutical manufacturing operations in Puerto Rico and Sweden.
The POMS system is a product of Honeywell's Hi-Spec Solutions unit - the leading provider of MES solutions to the pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods industries.
Initial implementations will be in Pharmacia's North American Dry Product Strategic Facility in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, and its Syringe Centre in Uppsala, Sweden.
A global cross-functional team at Pharmacia selected Honeywell's POMS product after an extensive review of available solutions and the ability of vendors to deliver solutions to sites around the world.
Each vendor's product was judged against critical technical and functional requirements to ensure the selected solution would meet the company's current and future needs.
As proof of concept, Honeywell devised a prototype plan that outlined a simultaneous implementation in both start-up plants, verifying that the different requirements of dry and sterile products would be fully addressed.
Wayne Castner, Chief Operating Officer of Honeywell's POMS business, said, "Pharmacia required a product that provides clear advantages in the areas of processing cycle time and time to benefit.
The company also needed to select a product and organisation that were capable of becoming its global standard.
Honeywell and POMS proved to offer an ideal solution." POMS solutions create substantial, tangible value by reducing time to market for new products; reducing costs and increasing responsiveness; and ensuring that operations are integrated into the e-business supply chain.
POMS's comprehensive functionality can be implemented in a third of the time of traditional MES applications.
POMS products are used by more than 15,000 users across 15 countries in industries including commercial and clinical pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals, primary pharmaceutical chemicals, medical device, food, beverage, and personal care products.
Customers include Baxter Healthcare, Boehringer Ingelheim, Hoechst Marion Roussel, Schering-Plough Research Institute, Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceuticals Research Institute, TNUVA Dairies, The JM Smucker Company, and RP Scherer.
