Hothouse Product Development Partners has won the Design Business Association (DBA) Design Effectiveness Award for the best industrial product.

Hothouse Product Development Partners has won the Design Business Association (DBA) Design Effectiveness Award for the best industrial product.

Hothouse beat two other finalists with its design of a patient-friendly new look for a high precision radiotherapy unit.

The award, given for the entire panelling and user interface design of Elekta Synergy, recognised a doubled amount of expected sales, reduction of manufacturing costs and end user appeal.

The design, and especially its introduction of colour, represents a breakthrough in the aesthetic image of cancer treatment equipment.

Neville Pryke, Senior Partner of Hothouse, and Dee Mathieson, Vice President of Product Management for the client company, Elekta, a leading supplier of radiation oncology solutions, received the award.

The DBA ceremony was held at the Honourable Artillery Company in central London, on 25th November 2003.

BBC2's Working Lunch presenter, Adrian Childs, presented the prestigious award.

After receiving the award Pryke, who recently gave A Level design students one-to-one tutorials, commented: "Creating a distinctive new look for such an advanced cancer treatment machine was an extremely important project for us.

It is a powerful example of the commercial benefits design can bring to business.

I am so pleased that this project has received the recognition it deserves".

"Hothouse deserved to win this award.

Their design team demonstrated real commitment whilst working with us and this encompassing design has been a major attribute to the Elekta Synergy project", stated Mathieson.

"Orders have already exceeded what we expected and the appealing image and improved ergonomics of the unit have certainly contributed to this".

Hothouse has already received an award from Elekta for its work on this project.

Hothouse was recently presented with an award for more than meeting Elekta's requirements for ergonomics, integration and colour.

This is also the second time Hothouse has received a DBA award.

The new, award-winning design of Elekta Synergy, which echoes the advanced technology of the machine itself and empathises with Elekta's brand, has been well received by both medical patients and staff.

This new radiotherapy unit, which treats between 40 and 50 patients a day, is already being used by some of the world's leading clinical institutions, including Christie Hospital in Manchester.
