Big guns re-affirm Hart commitment

A Hart Communication Foundation product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 12, 2003

Major process automation systems and instrumentation suppliers have confirmed their commitment to Hart communication technology.

Major process automation systems and instrumentation suppliers confirmed their commitment to Hart communication technology during a recent press conference held by the Hart Communication Foundation (HCF) in Frankfurt, Germany.

Representatives from Emerson Process Management, Endress+Hauser, Foxboro/Invensys, and Siemens expressed their commitment to deliver enhanced process automation solutions that fully use the capabilities of Hart technology when connected in real time.

"The product spectrum for Hart is continuously growing and has become the most used digital interface for our products", said Dr Raimund Sommer of Endress+Hauser.

"E+H will continue to integrate its Hart products into all the relevant control and asset management systems in the market".

"Hart is fully integrated into the Siemens Simatic PCS 7 process control system.

Field devices from Siemens are almost all equipped with Hart interfaces.

For us, Hart is a technology of the present and of the future", said Hans-Georg Kumpfmuller of Siemens.

"Most manufacturers are now offering advanced automation solutions that leverage the intelligence in Hart-smart field devices", HCF Executive Director Ron Helson says.

"All major suppliers now offer control system interfaces, remote I/O systems and PC-based software solutions that fully use both the 4-20mA and Hart digital communication channels to deliver continuous, real-time device diagnostics, multivariable process information and much more".

"We believe that Hart technology is essential for the concept of digital plants and for our PlantWeb message", said Dr Uwe Martens of Emerson Process Management.

"Therefore Hart is of strategic importance for the acceptance of all digital solutions, parallel and supportive to fieldbus technologies".

The Hart field communications protocol is celebrating 12 years as the world's leading process communication technology for smart instruments.

The protocol has been able to adapt to the changing nature of digital products without radical changes to the technology allowing old and new products to work seamlessly side-by-side in an interoperable environment.

"I'm constantly being asked by people in the industry how long I think Hart communication will last", says Helson.

"With the commitment and support of major systems suppliers, more than 12 million Hart installations worldwide, and our continued enhancement of the technology, it is clear Hart will remain a valuable communication solution today and in the plants of tomorrow".
