Stainless-steel flakes shine through coatings

A Hart Coating Technology product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jul 7, 2004

Novamet stainless steel flake pigments are manufactured from one of the higher quality grades of stainless steel and are ideal for incorporation, as pigments, into organic-based coating systems.

During the last 80 years stainless steel has become one of the world's most widely used, high-quality, construction materials with current annual production running at around 15 million tonnes.

The excellent corrosion and abrasion resistance of this class of material both to corrosion and abrasion makes it the material of choice for an immense range of consumer and industrial applications including many highly demanding ones, such as chemical plant construction.

Novamet stainless steel flake pigments are manufactured from one of the higher quality grades of stainless steel - Type UPS-S 31603 (formerly known as AISI Type 316L).

The properties of this particulate material are similar to those of the bulk product but their small-particle flake morphology makes them ideal for incorporation, as pigments, into organic-based coating systems.

Due to the high specular reflectance of the flakes, stainless-steel-containing coatings can be formulated with a variety of highly attractive visual finishes.

They can be incorporated into almost all common organic media used in the coatings industry, including solvent-based and water-based paints and powder products.

They are available in a number of grades, both leafing and non-leafing, and in two different size ranges.

Novamet stainless steel flake pigments are eminently suitable for a wide range of applications which require an attractive appearance but where good long-term durability in demanding environments is also vital.

Examples include architectural applications, automotive trim, maintenance coatings, furniture finishes, cookware surfacing and food-processing machinery.

This range of materials is manufactured by Novamet Specialty Products Corp of Wyckoff, New Jersey, USA, and distributed in the UK, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Holland and Ireland by Hart Coating Technology.

Dr Tony Hart believes that these flakes materials have untapped potential in many market sectors: "The unique combination of properties of these materials and their suitability for so many high quality coating products is still not fully appreciated by many coating manufacturers and possible end-users", he comments.
