Novamet Specialty Products Corp has introduction a novel pigment-grade refinement of its well-established Nickel Fine Leafing flake.

This new product is milled to a thickness in the region of 0.3-0.4um, which provides greatly enhanced opacity when it is incorporated into thin film coatings.

Over the past 20 years Novamet nickel flake products have achieved a first class reputation for performance and reliability.

The decorative grades - Nickel Fine Leafing and Nickel Fine Water - are used in wet paint and powder coatings where their rich lustre and mellow, yellow-tinged appearance provides a unique colour effect.

The flakes are also ideally suited for water-based coatings, particularly alkaline systems, due to the good inherent corrosion resistance of nickel.

Furthermore, their closely controlled particle size provides reproducible application characteristics, especially in ink films.

An increasingly important application depends on the inherent ferromagnetism of nickel enabling controlled magnetic properties to be achieved in thin coating films.

Other applications include high temperature antiseize lubricants and nonstick PTFE-based coatings.

The new Pigment Grade Nickel Fine Leafing Flake retains all the intrinsic benefits of the established grades, while enabling a much higher film opacity to be achieved - even in very thin coatings.

Dr Tony Hart, of distributor Hart Coating Technology, feels that this new grade of Novamet nickel flake increases the potential range of applications for this type of material.

"This is a significant improvement to an existing and well established product that provides a combination of properties making it suitable for major applications in new technologies", he comments.
