Julian Green's secondment with Huco Engineering has proved highly beneficial to both parties.
With a view to progressing his career in engineering management, Green joined Cranfield Institute's Fellowship in Manufacturing Management Programme.
This led to his placement with the leading manufacturer of drive couplings and a brief to review the production of its Multi-Beam range.
So successful was the partnership that in addition to receiving his Fellowship Award in September, Green has joined Huco Engineering in the new role of Production Manager to continue the good work.
A graduate production engineer with a background in the scientific and medical instrument sector, Green has certainly made his mark at Huco.
Having set up process capability studies on key plant to support justification for new investments, he led the purchasing team for new machinery.
The new equipment has an anticipated payback of 18 months.
Reduction techniques were also implemented through shop-floor coaching sessions.
He initiated mass customisation and Kanban policies with the full support of the production department, the result of which has been the dramatic reduction of customer lead-times from an average of 5 weeks to just 10 days.
This improvement has certainly contributed to the 10% increase in demand for the new coupling and freed-up 20% production capacity.
