Single-rail system saves space and money

A Huco Dynatork product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 5, 2004

By eliminating the need for external rail-to-screw alignment, the ScrewRail simplifies the design, manufacture and assembly of linear motion systems.

Linear motion has traditionally required separate components to handle drive and support/guidance, but thanks to a new patented device both functions can now be combined in a single, coaxial component.

This innovative product is the Kerk ScrewRail, available in the UK from sole UK distributor, Huco.

By eliminating the need for external rail-to-screw alignment, the ScrewRail simplifies the design, manufacture and assembly of linear motion systems.

It can provide as much as 80% space saving when compared with a two-rail system and is generally less expensive than the equivalent components purchased separately.

When reduced labour is added into the equation, the savings can be substantial.

The ScrewRail comprises a precision rolled lead screw supported by sealed bearings, contained within a concentric steel guide rail and driving an integrated nut/bushing.

As all the alignment requirements are integral to the assembly, support and positioning of the ScrewRail is far less critical than with traditional alternatives.

TFE coating and self-lubricating nut/bushing materials ensure long life without maintenance.

Two series of the ScrewRail are available.

The SRA range includes a standard nut for general applications where anti-backlash is not required.

This model is recommended for any application whose performance criteria include low drag and minimal free play.

The SRZ range features Kerk's patented axial take-up mechanism that provides continuous self-adjusting, anti-backlash properties.

Simple and compact mounting of the ScrewRail mechanism is ensured by optional end supports.

These are designed to slide over the outside diameter at either end of the rail and "key" off the slot in the ScrewRail.

The carbon-reinforced polyacetal end supports are provided with three hex nuts that are captured in the flange for easy assembly.

Other standard features include a brass threaded insert and set screw for fastening to the outside diameter of the rail.
