Bulgarian spring facility comes online

A William Hughes product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jun 23, 2005

William Hughes is now operating a purpose built 1000m2 production facility in Bulgaria.

Business is booming for William Hughes, the specialist manufacturer of springs and bent wire assemblies, so much so that the company is now operating a purpose built 1000m2 production facility in Bulgaria.

William Hughes has been manufacturing bent wire products for over 200 years and as demand has grown, the company has made significant investments in new machinery and facilities.

Now it has run out of space at its factory in Stalbridge, Dorset and with pressure from an increasingly competitive market, it is time for the company to have access to a low cost base manufacturing facility.

The new factory is located in the beautiful countryside at Striama, Rakovski about 20km from Plovdiv.

Completed in just 4 months, it represents an investment of over Eur 750,000.

As Max Hughes, Managing Director explains: "We already have leisure interests in Bulgaria and these experiences combined with the availability of excellent new facilities, friendly people and labour rates much lower than in the UK made Bulgaria the obvious choice".

The facility has the capacity to bend wire from 2 to 8mm in mild steel and the current workforce of seven employees is expected to quickly grow to 20 by Q3 2005.

New machinery installed on site includes a BMS4 from Wafios Germany, and a BMS4 and BM4, which are all the latest equipment in the world of CNC wire bending.

William Hughes has also constructed a purpose built plastic coating line for the new factory which will be operational July 2005.

As Max Hughes concludes: "We are very excited about this new venture".

"It provides a much needed expansion of our production facilities and with many of our customers operating on a European platform it provides us with a base in central Europe".

"This enables us to service the demands of a growing local economy as well as supplying our traditional markets in the UK and Germany".
