F1 floodlights utilise Hylec connectors

A Hylec-APL product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 24, 2008

Hylec-APL provided the plug and socket connectors used in the floodlights at the Singapore Grand Prix, the first night-time Grand Prix in F1's history.

Hylec's products provided ingress protection of IP68 and in house pre-wiring capabilities that reduced both installation time and installation errors on site.

The Singapore Grand Prix was held at night to ensure the European audience could view the event live during normal hours.

The lighting system needed to reproduce near-daylight conditions without creating glare in wet weather.

Singapore is an equatorial country with a climate characterised by high temperature, humidity and abundant rainfall.

Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent and humidity can often reach 100 per cent after heavy rainfall.

September 28, when the Grand Prix was held, is at the end of the southeast monsoon season, which meant all lighting equipment had to survive the wettest weather.

Older waterproof connectors can be bulky and in wet conditions the sockets would often have to be taped to ensure ingress protection.

However, it was essential the sockets used for the Grand Prix had a fast installation time and would guarantee protection from the high moisture levels likely to be present.

Hylec-APL supplied a reliable five-pole plug and socket connector.

The plug and socket connectors are part of the Teeplug range, available with a variety of ingress protection that reaches IP68, ensuring protection from total submersion in water.

Teeplug connectors are two-part inline connectors, a male and female, which allows customers to pre-wire the product in-house, reducing installation time and minimising on-site installation errors.

The sockets use a double seal arrangement to achieve the ingress protection: an o-ring seal on the male part of the socket and an end seal on the female side.

The connector has a close tolerance interference fit and then a simple twist lock collar to secure the connection.

Red gaskets make identification easier.

The silicon materials have an excellent tensile E-Modulus and ageing-resistance to provide product longevity.

The IP65, a fast locking/unlocking version is also available, as is the IP68, a panel/chassis mount option for use with enclosures or bulkheads.

Interchangeable Teeplug plug-socket connections make the range even more versatile.
