More reliable alternative to bolt-tensioning

A Hytorc (Unex) product story

A faster, cheaper, more reliable alternative to bolt-tensioning is now available to busy operators in many industries.

Hytorc (Unex) of Blyth, Northumberland, is now marketing in the UK a revolutionary new three-piece nut/bolt replacement called a Hytorc-Clamp.

It has the same dimensions as the nut or bolt that it replaces but its inner sleeve is spline-connected with a washer, making it subject to greater turning friction than the outer sleeve attached to it.

They are already bringing dramatic cost-savings to operators elsewhere around the world.

For instance, retrofitting 230 turbine nuts with Hytorc-Clamps at a German power plant was completed with total success by four operatives in 7 hours 43 minutes and gained 51 hours of additional power generation over any previous method.

Here's how it works.

A hydraulic tool is deployed to divert the reaction force to the part with the greater turning friction and the action force to the one with the lower turning friction.

The outer sleeve starts turning, pulling up the inner sleeve ( to a pre-calibrated tension) and thus the nut or bolt - but torsion- and side-load free! As the turning takes place on surfaces precision-machined by Hytorc in the manufacturing process, the coefficient of friction is known to a load accuracy of ñ 3% with the customer's desired lubricant.

The average time for each nut/bolt is two minutes.

The speed of operations is dramatic and there's a corresponding and important increase in efficiency from this retrofit upgrade.

This can bring significant cost savings in activities relating to turbines, feed water and other pumps, stop valves, couplings and rotors and in all industrial applications where especial care and accuracy is necessary.

Hytorc-Clamps can be used up to 535øC (1000øF) No specialist personnel are needed.

No reaction point is required because the tool reacts against the Hytorc-Clamp so it can be used in very limited access situations and operated hands-free, remotely or upside down! Industries that will benefit materially in both time and costs include oil and gas ( offshore and onshore ), hydrocarbons and chemical processing, power generation, water, water-related and other utilities, construction and civil engineering, aerospace and general process engineering.

GE, Siemens- Westinghouse and other leading companies have approved them for operations world-wide.

International patents are in place and the Hytorc-Clamp has won several prestigious accolades including the Euro-, German and Japanese Technology Awards.
