The VCM50a is a new progressive scan smart camera, manufactured by Vision Components.

The VCM50a is a new progressive scan smart camera, manufactured by Vision Components, and available from IMT at Eur 777.

Michael Schaefer, vice president of Vision Components, said: "We believe the VCM50 is the lowest cost and the smallest progressive scan CCD image processing system worldwide".

The advantage of progressive scan by using a VCM50 is that the exposure of the whole image is done at once, which is ideal for inspection of fast-moving parts.

Key features of the new system are: a frame-rate of 50 full frames per second on 640 x 480pixel; a B and W CCD; 8Mbyte RAM and 512Kbyte Flash; an IP65 rigid housing (NEMA 4); a built-in LED ring-strobe; a built-in lens; JPEG video output; and a 'binning' facility.

Binning is the physical addition of the electronic charge from neighbouring lines of pixels, giving twice and four-times the sensitivity of a standard CCD.

As only one half or one quarter of the Y resolution is used, the image acquisition is two- or four-times as spaced - ie 200 quarter frames per second.

This means that a user can acquire one quarter of the frames at higher speed.
