Hose takes the heat of huge diesel engines

An Icore International product story

Icore International's tape-wrapped convoluted PTFE hose has been chosen by Cummins Engine Company to play a vital role in the new Cummins QSK78 engine which, with its huge 3500 horsepower (2610kW) output, is one of the most powerful diesels ever built for use in mobile equipment.

The hose, which features a stainless-steel sheath to provide mechanical protection and aid heat dissipation, is used to return hot oil from the engine's turbocharger to the sump.

Cummins QSK78 engines are based on the technology used in the company's smaller QSK60 products which have achieved an enviable reputation for offering 98%+ uptime, even in the toughest operating conditions.

Designed to match or even exceed this uptime figure, the new 78-litre 18-cylinder engine will serve as the power pack for huge 400-tonne mine haul trucks and excavators.

The turbo drain hoses, like all of the components used in the construction of the engines, have, therefore, been selected to provide the best possible reliability, while also offering exceptional value for money.

In this demanding application, the hose is required to operate at temperatures considerably in excess of 150C when the engine is running but, depending on the where the equipment is being used, it may be subjected to below-freezing conditions when the engine is stopped.

With its operating temperature range of -54 to +204C, Icore's PTFE hose is easily able to meet these requirements.

Other benefits which influenced Cummins' selection of this high performance hose for the QSK78 engine include greatly enhanced flexibility and kink resistance when compared with ordinary smooth bore hoses, and exceptional tolerance to the effects of vibration.

In addition, Icore's PTFE hose features a non-flammable and chemically inert core which is entirely unaffected by exposure to mineral oils, making it ideally suited to engine applications.

Icore International supplies turbo drain hoses to Cummins' Daventry plant in the form of ready-to-fit assemblies, complete with end fittings.

For connection to the engine itself, a custom "Spud" end fitting is used.

This was developed jointly by engineers from Icore and Cummins, in order to meet requirements for easy installation in a very restricted space.

A standard fitting, chosen from the extensive Icore range, is used at the other end of the hose.
