Workshop explains control of steam boilers

An IDC Technologies product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Sep 1, 2005

During October 2005, IDC is presenting a two day workshop on "Boiler control and instrumentation" in Manchester, Edinburgh and London.

IDC is presenting a two day workshop on "Boiler control and instrumentation" in Manchester on 10th and 11th October, in Edinburgh on 13th and 14th October and in London on 17th and 18th October 2005.

This workshop introduces the basic practices of controls systems and safety controls for industrial steam generating boilers.

It focuses on the control and safety requirements applicable to most types of boilers from small gas-fired units to large multi-fuel installations.

The workshop will provide training in how control and instrumentation is designed to manage the main variables such as drum water level, furnace draft, combustion fuel and air conditions.

Burner management systems are introduced with their principal features including flame safety systems.

The essential safety requirements for boilers and burners are identified and the corresponding safety interlocks are explained as practical solutions in accordance with the latest safety standards.

The course content, which includes eight practical exercises and assignment sessions, is to be presented by Dave Macdonald.

Throughout his career he has been involved in the application of instrumentation and control technology to industrial and chemical processes.

As senior instrument engineer with AECI he specialised in managing the complete design cycle for process control systems from conceptual design to commissioning.

He has also developed and lectured a post-graduate course in industrial control systems.

Macdonald has been closely involved in hazard studies for new chemical plants and in the implementation of safety instrumented systems.

His expertise, ranging from field instrumentation to software quality assurance, is particularly relevant to the subject of this workshop, which has been developed by IDC Technologies to reflect recent developments in international practices.

In the past few years, Macdonald has lectured on this and related topics to over a thousand engineers and technicians in the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia and South Africa.

His positive and enthusiastic approach, combined with his broad knowledge of the subject, makes attendance at this workshop desirable.
