IDC Technologies is presenting its final two workshops of 2005 in London, Cardiff and Leeds, during the first two weeks in December.

The first is a 2 day workshop, "Practical electrical substation safety", running in London on 30th November and 1st December, in Cardiff on 5th and 6th December and in Leeds on 12th and 13th December.

The second is a 1 day workshop, "High voltage safety operating procedures for engineers and technicians", running in London on 2nd December, in Cardiff on 7th December and in Leeds on 14th December.

The second workshop is scheduled to run directly after the first, in each city, to accommodate delegates wanting to attend both.

The workshops are related, but do stand alone.

If both are attended there is a saving to be made on cost.

"Practical electrical substation safety" is a workshop containing information vital to utility networks as well as large industrial installations.

The theoretical aspects of safety will be covered as will the practical and statutory issues.

Safety is not simply a matter of taking precautions in the workplace.

It has to start at the stage of equipment design.

Correct selection and application of electrical machinery is also important for ensuring safety.

A thorough inspection during initial erection and commissioning as well as on a periodic basis thereafter is also very essential to ensure safety.

Batteries used in substations need particular attention since they contain toxic materials, such as lead and corrosive chemicals, such as acid or alkali.

"High voltage safety operating procedures" covers the basic procedures in working safely on high voltage systems.

Employees performing operations and maintenance work on high voltage electrical transmission and distribution systems are exposed to a greater hazard than most other employees.

Reg Rosen, the instructor for both workshops, is a Senior Protection Consultant who has worked in the area of electrical power systems for the past 30 years and has built up an enviable track record in designing, commissioning and maintaining transmission and distribution equipment throughout the world.

He commenced his career in the UK with the well known manufacturers Reyrolle and Parsons, where he gained experience in switchgear, transformers and turbo-generators.

He has worked in many countries, including a long stint with one of the world's largest utilities (Eskom).

He became Technical Director of Reyrolle Parsons and was then appointed Marketing Manager for a Rolls Royce Industrial Power Group company in the UK.

He has presented numerous courses and papers throughout the world including Australia, Austria, the UK, Canada and South Africa on power electrical engineering topics and has acted as a consultant to many blue chip companies.

He is an enthusiastic presenter with a wealth of experience and superb communication skills.
