Icom launches IDAS digital PMR radios

An Icom (UK) product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 28, 2008

Icom UK has released a Digital Private Mobile Radio (DPMR) system called IDAS (Icom Digital Advanced System).

IDAS is a digital system for business and industry, which uses digital modulation and common air interface protocol utilising 6.25kH channel spacing that can allow twice the amount of users on the radio spectrum.

IDAS utilises the latest digital technology and, as part of a digital system, it can be used side by side with existing analogue radios.

The system offers digital clarity, spectrum efficiency and the ability for customers to manage their purchases rather than buying a complete new system all at once.

IDAS offers digitally modulated clear voice, secure 4,800bps data communication and retains compatibility with current analogue systems.

The IDAS series is capable of mixed mode operation in which the radio can receive analogue mode and digital mode signals on a single channel.

Icom aims to help users gradually replace existing analogue systems and future-proof investment in their radio system.

The IDAS radio system allows migration to narrow band digital, while still running an existing analogue system.

The radios are designed primarily for business and industry users in factories, warehouses, hotels, construction sites, security, transportation and so on.

The models that will launch this series include IC-F3162DT/DS, F4162DT/DS VHF/UHF digital handheld transceivers, IC-F5062D/F6062D VHF/UHF digital mobile transceivers and the IC-FR5100/FR6100 VHF/UHF digital repeaters, which provides the backbone of the new digital system.

Icom has also recently developed DPMR446 license-free communication for consumer, business and industry users in Europe.

Icom also offers a digital low-power radio system with IP connectivity for the Japanese market.
