ICS Triplex is to supply its Trusted emergency shutdown control technology to Duke Energy Corporation for controlling the operation of two fuel rod insertion systems in a pressurised water power plant, via a contract placed by engineering contractor Framatone Fuel rods are moved into and out of the reactors to exactly match power generation with current demand

With supreme accuracy, availability and reliability being performance prerequisites alongside absolutely guaranteed instantaneous emergency shutdown capabilities, the rod insertion control systems have to be specified with very great care.

Framatone identified Trusted as the best solution for this demanding application for a number of reasons.

First, was its unique ability to distribute intelligence throughout the system, right to the I/O modules.

This reduces data traffic, speeding up response times and enhancing reliability.

Secondly, ICS was able to supply embedded firmware for precision frequency-modulated control of the insertions motors.

Other control systems Framatone considered all required separate motor control, which would have added considerable programming and integration complications and increased the number of potential failure modes.

A key consideration was the very high reliability and availability for which Trusted systems are renowned.

Power station control systems have to be able to react instantly to emergency situations, but must also be fault-tolerant in order to avoid spurious tripping and shutdowns.

ICS bases its fault-tolerance on RunSafe 3-3-2-0, a unique proprietary technology in which 64 bit processors give 1msec sequence of event resolution, yet which ensures exceptional availability by multiple-level assessment of possible fault signals.

This has the potential to reduce the user's cost of ownership by several orders of magnitude, as restarting after a spurious shutdown can be extremely expensive.

Despite its incredible performance Trusted is very user friendly, being programmed in the popular IEC61131-3 configuration languages, and communicating to other control systems via a dual redundant MODBUS link, OPC and open Ethernet networks.

Trusted is certified by TUV for AK6 applications, the highest possible rating for fault-tolerant systems.

As well as power generation, it is used for oil and gas drilling; in hydrocarbon processing plants; for transcontinental gas distribution, and even in rocket launch control.
