All about the Institution of Diagnostic Engineers

An Institution of Diagnostic Engineers product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 8, 2001

The Institution of Diagnostic Engineers offers membership to engineers who can demonstrate by documentation and position in a company that they have a competence in diagnostic engineering

In 1982 the late Dr Ralph Collacott, retired from the De Montford University in Leicester where he lectured in Vibration Analyses and Condition Monitoring among other subjects; feeling that this area was much underdeveloped, he formed the Institution of Diagnostic Engineers offering membership only to those engineers who could demonstrate by documentation and position in a company that they had a competence in these areas.

The Institution grew at one time to over 4000 members internationally and still has members in over 50 countries.

The objectives of the Institution, now formally constituted under a management council, are the furtherment of the education in Diagnostic Engineering and Condition Monitoring by means of the Institution Journal distan learning courses and branch meetings.

To encourage further enhancement and development of these skills, it has now gone further.

In co-operation with the leading Engineering NVQ/SVQ awards body - EAL - it has developed a Diploma in Diagnostic Engineering which will be awarded to members who submit evidence of Credits in specified relevant NVQ Units at level 3.

These can be obtained through one of the National network of EAL-approved centres advised and directed to candidates by the Institution for a nominal fee.

In launching this Diploma it has also widened its membership to include Corporate Membership for companies which will entitle them to nominate a specified number of appropriate engineers for membership as Members (MIDiag.E) or Fellows (FIDiag.E) (individual membership is up to ?42 ( ?25 for Students) plus a nominal joining fee.

This fee includes bi-monthly copies of the Journal of the Institution free.

Those interested in joining the Institution and/or taking up the Diploma should contact The Institution of Diagnostic Engineers for details and a brochure on the Diploma.

Industry is becoming even more aware of the value employing engineers in this field who have been granted membership of the Institution.
