Engineering reliable, high-performance electrical connections across a moving interface has long been a challenge for designers and engineers working in automation, aeronautics, medical or military applications.
Applications such as night targeting systems, robotics, machine tools and even spaceflight, demand exceptional performance and reliability.
Where full rotational capability is not required, IDM Electronics' twist capsules provide a high performance, long-life alternative to cable wrap assemblies or slip rings.
Twist capsules use flexible circuit technology as the internal medium, allowing dense mechanical packaging and very low torque contributions.
This technology provides an exceptionally long life and avoids the use of sliding contacts that can generate dynamic electrical noise.
Twist capsules are particularly suitable for demanding limited excursion angle applications such as electro-optical sensors, servo-systems, robotics and machine tools.
With a lifespan that can extend beyond 10 million cycles, their reliability makes them an ideal candidate for mission-critical aeronautical or spaceflight applications such as navigational systems or pointing devices.
Twist capsules can be engineered to meet the most demanding electrical and mechanical specifications.
Several types of internal construction are available, each one optimised for specific characteristics such as mechanical size, longevity or electrical characteristics.
Clockspring type units have small outer diameters and are best suited to applications requiring tightly controlled impedance values and long lifespans.
Rolling loop types are preferable where axial length is limited, or where electrical shielding, large wire gauges or a large number of circuits are required.
