Challenge seeks innovative sustainable solutions

A scheme run by the IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers), aimed at supporting practical contributions to a sustainable society, has been launched for a second year.
The "New Spirit Challenge" is seeking individuals with innovative solutions to the problems of sustainable development, which balance the potential of technology with the needs of society, people and the environment.
This could involve a new approach, a new business, new products or services, or even a new way of organising that creates wealth for all partners and enhances the environment and quality of life.
The prize will be tailored to the needs of the winning entry and will inject resources and backing needed to help ensure the success of the selected project.
The 2001 challenge was won by Peter Boait for a home energy network that uses mobile telecomms concepts to integrate small-scale renewable-based generation.
A series of workshops have enabled Boait to gain expert advice and support to further develop his ideas and he will be joining a delegation attending part of the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development in South Africa in August.
The challenge is open to individuals or small teams - both engineers and nonengineers - anywhere in the world.
Entries will be judged by a panel of experts including Professor Roland Clift, Director for the Centre for Environmental Strategy and Sara Parkin, Programme Director of Forum for the Future.
The initiative is being run by Engineering for a Sustainable Future Professional Network, a global forum set up by the IEE to engage both engineers and nonengineers in discussion, activities and collaborations which promote sustainability.
The closing date for entries is 5pm GMT on the 27th September 2002.
