The IEE is awarding its highest honour, the Faraday Medal, to Professor Peter Grant, head of the school of engineering and electronics at the University of Edinburgh, in recognition of his outstanding work on signal processing.

With a career spanning over three decades, Peter Grant has made a significant and sustained contribution in this specialist field at both international and national levels.

As the 82nd recipient of the Faraday Medal, Peter Grant joins a distinguished roll of honour that commenced in 1922 with Oliver Heaviside, whose area of expertise was research into electro-magnetic waves.

Peter Grant is responsible for supervised studies on a wide range of subjects from speech band data modems to sight digital radio-relay systems.

In addition, through his leadership, the Signals and Systems Group at the University of Edinburgh, is recognised internationally for its pioneering contributions to the sector.

Each year, the IEE also awards two Honorary Fellowships.

These have been awarded to both Dr Ian Nussey, chairman of IBM UK's technical consultancy group, and Sir Peter Williams, chairman of the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) and the Department of Trade and Industry's Japan Business Network, for their individual and outstanding contributions to UK engineering.
