The IEE has endorsed the Government's announcement that from 2005 anyone undertaking domestic electrical installation work in England and Wales must comply with Part P of the Building Regulations.

This week the Government announced that from 1st January 2005 anyone undertaking domestic electrical installation work in England and Wales must comply with Part P of the Building Regulations.

It will, for the first time, place a legal requirement for safety on electrical installation work in dwellings.

As part of its ongoing commitment to standards and safety within the electrical installation industry, the IEE welcomes the Government's announcement and the establishment of Part P Competent Person Schemes.

Part P Competent Person Schemes will enable successful applicants to self-certify that their work meets the requirements of Part P.

Firms that are not registered as competent persons will need to notify local authority building control before work commences and may also be subject to inspections.

Nick Canty, Business Development Manager for the IEE Standards and Compliance Department says: "The IEE welcomes the introduction of Competent Person Schemes as a way of enhancing professionalism within the industry and ensuring consumer protection".

"The IEE plays a key role in the electrical installation industry in terms of standards and safety and jointly publishes the IEE Wiring Regulations with the British Standards Institution (BSI)".
