Formula Student 2004, the sold-out student racing competition, is in top gear for this weekend's event (9th-11th July) at Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome and Proving Ground, south of Leicester The competition, which requires engineering students to design and build a small single-seater racing car, will see 64 cars and over 80 teams compete from universities from across, Britain and Europe, North America, Australia, India, Japan, S Korea and Slovenia

The university teams will test their cars' capabilities in a variety of events, including design, presentation, cost, acceleration, sprint, endurance and fuel economy.

As a key partner of the Formula Student competition, the IEE is awarding trophies for "Most effective use of electronics", "Best presentation" and "Best use of a website" to encourage and acknowledge excellence in engineering practice.

Teams must design and fabricate a high performance, low-cost prototype car that handles well, uses common parts and is safe, easy to maintain, reliable, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.

Competition classes enable teams to use Formula Student as a progress learning exercise throughout a three or four-year academic course.

Classes range from full-scale entries (Class 1) and competitors from the previous year who have refined their prototype (Class 1 200), to partially completed vehicles for inspection (Class 2) and desktop studies (Class 3).

A full list of participating universities and a detailed programme are available on www.formulastudent.com.

Formula Student, in partnership with the IEE and the SAE, is organised by The Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Entry for spectators is free and open to all. Request free introductory details about products from Institution of Engineering and Technology ...
