Civil engineer wins Karen Burt Award

Suzanne Bland, an outstanding young civil engineer, has been named as the winner of the 2004 Karen Burt Award.

Suzanne Bland, an outstanding young civil engineer, has been named as the winner of the 2004 Karen Burt Award, made annually to a young female engineer who has recently gained chartered status and has a proven record of excellence and dedication to the engineering profession Bland received her award from Pam Wain, President of the Women's Engineering Society (WES), following the Daphne Jackson Memorial Lecture at the IEE, Savoy Place, London

"I am honoured to have been nominated by my colleagues and am proud of the profession I have joined", said Bland, who has worked for KBR, the engineering and construction group, since graduating from Manchester with a degree in geochemistry and then Imperial with an MSc in engineering geology.

She is currently Assistant Business Development Manager for infrastructure consulting work across Africa, Middle East and the former Soviet Union region.

She has worked in many areas, including being seconded to the UK Environment Agency as a Project Manager dealing with a variety of flood defence projects, and she is about to embark on postgraduate certificate in engineering management.

She is a Chartered Engineer, Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Fellow of the Geological Society and has been nominated for the ICE's 2004 James Rennie Medal.

Bland is very active in promoting engineering to schools, university students, new graduates, professionals and the community.

Her drive and enthusiasm make her an excellent ambassador for the engineering profession and a worthy winner of the award.

The Karen Burt Award was first made by the WES in 1999 and commemorates the life of Dr Karen Burt, an eminent physicist and engineer whose career was cut short by a stroke which led to her early death.

The award is funded by a bequest made by Burt's father, Professor Cyril Hilsum CBE FRS FEng FInstP, and Leonard Weisberg FIEEE.
