Jargon buster cuts through the ATEX jungle
ABB has published an "ATEX jargon buster" that helps motor users cut through the jungle of terms and definitions that make up the new ATEX Directives.
Although the figures show a positive overall rise in sciences, the engineering and computer science disciplines, which are so crucial to UK industry, are either declining or not increasing at the rate that is required.
The uptake of electronic and electrical engineering is consistently low and specialist areas, such as power engineering, are still receiving only a quarter of the number of applicants needed to sustain the industry.
The IEE is working together with companies and educators to address this problem through initiatives such as the IEE Power Academy, an industry based a scholarship programme that has expanded this year due to an increase in demand.
IEE Director of Qualifications Dorrie Giles said more like this needs to be done to attract students to the engineering profession at a younger age: "Engineering and technology is vital to the UK's prosperity, yet continues to take a back seat in our schools and education system".
"Until this is addressed the uptake of these subjects at university level will continue to be significantly lower than that is required by industry".
"The IEE spends nearly GBP 2 million every year promoting science and technology in schools, providing resources to teachers and inspiring an enthusiasm in children for the practical application of science to solve problems and address the needs of society".
"It is through these activities that we hope to encourage students into engineering professions and guarantee the future of our country and economy". Request free introductory details about products from Institution of Engineering and Technology ...
