Nicholas Hughes and Dr Ian Craddock have been jointly awarded the prestigious IEE JA Lodge Award for their outstanding work in the area of medical engineering.

Nicholas Hughes from the University of Oxford and Dr Ian Craddock from Bristol University have been jointly awarded the prestigious IEE JA Lodge Award for their outstanding work in the area of medical engineering.

The recipients were presented with their award and GBP 250 cash prize on 14th December 2005 during the annual Wheatstone Lecture at the IEE.

The JA Lodge award is presented annually to a promising electronics or electrical engineer up to the age of 35 working in the field of research and development in medical engineering.

Due to the high calibre of entries received the judges decided to present this prize jointly for the first time.

Hughes was commended for his development of an automated system to analyse ECG waveforms recorded in the course of a clinical drug trial.

His research has led to the development of a fundamentally new approach to the problem of automated QT interval analysis, based on the use of a probabilistic model of the electrocardiogram.

Dr Craddock was rewarded for setting up a microwave radar breast imaging group, developing the technology and forming a spinout company to further fund and develop the work.

His research places the Bristol team at the very forefront of the worldwide effort to develop a microwave-based breast cancer screening technique.
