Engineers and scientists should take the lead in the battle against crime, is the message from a free lecture due to be held at the IEE, Savoy Place, London, on 2nd March 2006.

Crimewatch's Nick Ross will call on engineers and scientists to take the lead in the battle against crime when he speaks at the IEE, Savoy Place, London, on 2nd March 2006, where he will discuss the discipline of crime science to an audience of potential crime busters.

He will argue there is too much focus on criminals and not enough on crimes - in other words, that by seeing convictions as our endpoint we overlook the patterns which point to wider dangers and better prevention.

Crime science is a new and multidisciplinary approach that investigates patterns in crime to find new ways to disrupt crime patterns and incorporates criminology, mathematics, physics, geography, architecture and a host of other disciplines.

Given his 20 years catching crooks with Crimewatch, Ross gives an unexpected spin to the lecture, arguing that too much effort is spent "closing stable doors after the horses have bolted".

"Politicians, their advisers and other policy makers encourage debate which conflates crime with punishment and law with order and that generally overlooks the potent role designers and engineers have in (unintentionally) promoting crime".

"Those who construct the world we inhabit can be the architects of a coherent new approach to cutting crime and one that could have huge implications for our crime rates," he said.

Appealing to all age groups, this free lecture will highlight effective use of science in any criminal investigation and illustrate the diversity of the science and engineering profession.
