DTI supports innovation awards

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has agreed to support the Institution of Engineering and Technology's premier awards event, the Innovation in Engineering Awards.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has agreed to support the Institution of Engineering and Technology's premier awards event, the Innovation in Engineering Awards.

The deadline for applications is 30th June 2006 and entry forms are available from the institution's website.

This is the only multisector awards event dedicated to recognising outstanding innovation in engineering and will be presented by Adam Hart-Davis at a gala ceremony at Savoy Place, London on 11th October 2006.

The DTI joins an esteemed list of supporters and sponsors for the second year of this successful event, which will be a showcase of some of the most pioneering companies from both the UK and overseas.

Science and Innovation Minister, Lord Sainsbury said: "The DTI is proud to support the IET Innovation in Engineering awards".

"Awards such as these underpin our commitment to encouraging and promoting innovation in the UK, and it is innovative companies that drive our economy forward, and provide inspiration to the next generation of entrepreneurs".

Awards will be presented in the sectors of: electronics; emerging technologies; IT manufacturing; power; product design; project team; robotics and control; security, sustainability and telecommunications; and transport.

In addition 2006 will see the addition of four new categories: asset management, built environment, software design and startups.

A panel of recognised industry leaders, experts and representatives of the sponsoring organisations will judge entries in each category.

Prominent individuals who have agreed to chair the judging panels include: Alice Rawthsthorn, Design Museum; Sir John Chisholm, QinetiQ; Prof Andy Hopper, University of Cambridge; Prof Fred Piper, Royal Holloway (University of London); David Lee, Storage Subsystems Development; John Loughead, UK Energy Research Centre; Alan Kell, i and i; Prof Jeremy Watson, BOC Edwards; and Sir Robin Saxby, ARM Holdings.
