The Institution of Engineering and Technology has announced the 54 companies short-listed in its annual Innovation in Engineering Awards.

The prestigious awards are the only multidisciplinary engineering awards and attract entries from around the world.

This year's finalists include: Tube Lines in the asset management category for transforming their escalator renewal approach; Halcrow Yalles in the built environment category for Dalby forest's visitors centre, North Riding Forest Park; Jaguar Cars in the transport category for its XK active pedestrian safety system; and Hewlett Packard in the emerging technologies category for its memory spot - bridging the physical and digital worlds.

Dr Alf Roberts, CEO of the IET said: "These awards recognise the vital role that innovation in engineering plays in the global economy".

"The standard of entries has been very high and all the finalists display true innovation in their respective categories".

There are 17 awards, each sponsored by a major company, and the winners will be announced at an awards evening on 11th October 2006, at a ceremony at the IET's London HQ in Savoy Place, hosted by TV personality Adam Hart-Davis.

The awards are supported by the Department of Trade and Industry.

Lord Sainsbury of Turville, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Science and Innovation at the DTI will introduce the awards.

The IET has worked closely with the DTI and the Queen's Awards Office to promote the Innovation category of the Queen's Awards for Enterprise.

The full list can be found on the IET website.
