The IET Innovation in Engineering Awards were presented at a special ceremony at the IET's London HQ, Savoy Place, hosted by TV personality Adam Hart-Davis.

Using microwaves to detect breast cancer tumours, a company that use sunlight and seawater in specially built greenhouses to grow crops in arid areas and improved safety features for pedestrians in a new Jaguar car were among the winners in this year's IET Innovation in Engineering Awards.

The IET Innovation in Engineering Awards recognise and celebrate excellence in engineering innovation across a range of industry sectors and engineering disciplines.

Winners were selected from hundreds of entries from around the world by a distinguished panel of judges.

The prestigious global awards were presented at a special ceremony at the IET's London HQ, Savoy Place, hosted by TV personality Adam Hart-Davis.

Speaking at the awards ceremony Dr Alf Roberts, IET Chief Executive said: "Innovation is about identifying market needs, coming up with the ideas that capture this potential value and then bringing these ideas to life through effective management, organisation and processes".

"In addition to being at the forefront of advancing and disseminating knowledge and playing a key role in promoting engineering and technology, the IET is committed to encouraging and celebrating the spirit of innovation displayed by the winners and finalists of these awards".

The awards have been supported by the Department of Trade and Industry.

Lord Sainsbury of Turville, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Science and Innovation at the DTI attended the awards.

The IET has worked closely with the DTI and the Queen's Awards Office to promote the Innovation category of the Queen's Awards for Enterprise.

Science and Innovation Minister, Lord Sainsbury said: "The DTI is proud to support the IET Innovation in Engineering awards".

"Awards such as these underpin our commitment to encouraging and promoting innovation in the UK, and it is innovative companies that drive our economy forward, and provide inspiration to the next generation of entrepreneurs".

The list of winners can be found on the IET website.
